#1 Complaint(s) about Business Catalyst Missing Features

I am posting this as a relative newbie to BC but as a long time (since 1994) web designer and programmer.  I encourage others to respond with their own suggestions for improvement.
Business Catalyst's Missing Features

Business Catalyst’s Missing Features

1. The lack of responsive templates AND responsive menus  ( I find this so far behind the development curve for current design as to be almost unbelievable.   I normally learn new systems by taking templates and coding apart and putting them back together, but for non-coders esp.,  the system for creating flexible designs and menus is opaque to say the least.  Adobe has a habit of developing products targeted towards designers as end users, but fit only for coders who ALREADY understand and know how to use the proprietary code.  I suffered through 3 iterations of ActionScript (for Flash) only to finally give up trying to keep up with all the “improvements” which made it almost impossible for someone who was not a full-time programmer /coder to use.  There are no “plugins” or “extensions” to BC that allow the non-dedicated coder to easily implement basic features already readily available with other programs like Word Press, Bootstrap, Drupal, or with third-party extension makers for Dreamweaver,  like Project Seven (PVII) or DMXzone.   In addition, the available documentation, like that from BCGurus, is not simple enough to add complex features like responsive menus or designs).

2. Related to #1,  I have not found out a simple step-by-step tutorial as to how one might create a Dreamweaver set of templates that use responsive design and responsive menus, and make them work on BC.  For example, the dynamic menu system in BC will not use PVII JavaScript, and its inbred detection methods invalidate PVII responsive scripts, so that is a no go.  I went through an entire tutorial on BCGurus on creating responsive menus, but found them unhelpful because there was a complete gap on showing how to apply such menu systems to the BC CSS HTML menus.  Yes there was a tutorial sort of, but it did not deal with multilevel responsive menus, only top-level, which was useless.  What would be nice is a start to finish tutorial (for free on ADOBE), taking a Bootstrap or Dreamweaver template, with responsive design and responsive menus, and implementing it on BC.

If #1 were available, it might be simple enough to use the template as a structural code base and then edit the CSS of it to one’s liking; creating basically new sites with the template code, but even the BCGuru templates with responsive menus have so many levels of web apps embedded inside of modules inside of content holders inside of web apps, that trying to use those templates with custom designs (or client specific content!) becomes equivalent to a month-long African Safari tracking down the fabled wildebeest of Gnome.

I will not even get into, except mention, the lack of custom coding functionality of BC as compared to PHP/MySQL, or some of the basic features missing on the shopping cart available on most e-commerce sites today.

Anyway, that is my rant for the day.

Matias Quiet Pro Keyboard for Mac – A Review

Having been a Mac user since 1984 and having gone through multiple keyboards since, including the OEM thin line keyboards of late and a couple from third party makers, I have missed the early mechanical keyboards of yesteryear.

I find that the soft clickety-clack of this keyboard and the press-play distance of the keys allows me to type with fewer mistakes and keeps my fingers in place more easily. I was concerned about the reports of the standard keyboard by Matias being too loud, so I took a chance on this quiet version. I am very happy. Since I type all day for a living, having precise feedback to my fingers is extremely important.

I would heartily recommend this keyboard to anyone who misses the feel of the old mechanical style keys.

My only wish is that it could have been a Bluetooth version, but since it also has hubs for USB, I cannot complain too much.

FAA Lays off the Workers

Ain’t it just like the government? Lay off the people who actually do the work, but keep the bureaucrats in place??? Thank you Mr. President for punishing the American People for political advantage… Cynical, without a doubt.

Marathon Bombings, Fear and False Security

“We should pass a law against bombings!

…Oh, yeah, we already have one…”

You cannot prevent evil people, bent upon evil, from doing evil. They will find a way to do it. What they want to do is illegal already, and the absurdity of passing a law against the crime only provides people with a false sense of security.

It is understandable, in the wake of tragedies such as Boston or Newtown, that people want to do something to prevent evil from happening, but as good as the government is or can be in preventing such attacks, it cannot do it perfectly. No amount of laws would have prevented the bombing in Boston. Those intent on breaking the law don’t care about laws. Fear, in response to these attacks, creates irrational behavior. In panic, people want some unseen power to protect them from all possible things that can go wrong, but their hope is illusory and unrealistic. Passing a ton of laws will not solve the problem of fear; it only provides a false sense of security, as if the Government were God and could magically protect them from all unknowns.

There is a role for government in preventing attacks and defending the nation. That is the proper role of any government, and by and large, it seems that the government has done a decent job of providing a measure of safety at home during the last 12 years, but the real danger is that the people, moved by panic and fear, will surrender all their liberties for the illusion of safety. In the post-911 rush for security, laws were passed which directly contradict the US Constitution. Citizens are subject to warrantless searches. They can also be held indefinitely in prison without trial or without even being charged with a crime.

Boston Marathon BombingIn Nazi Germany, everyone had to have identity papers with them at all times. The government, in the name of security, wanted total control over the people. The danger is that our people will give  absolute control over to the government in order to give them a false sense of security and protection from evil.

In biblical terms, this attitude towards government is known as idolatry: turning to man to provide for all our needs for safety, security, food, and welfare. Man becomes our provider, and God is out of the picture.  We become willing to sell our freedom for the false promise of our protection. “Take our freedoms, only give us food!”

“Thus says the LORD: “Cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh his arm (strength), whose heart turns away from the LORD.”- Jeremiah 17:5

That is why the gun control issue is also a red-herring. Criminals will get guns, just like they get drugs and enter the country illegally. If the government cannot prevent crime, drugs, or illegal entry into the US, how can it prevent criminals from getting guns or bomb makers from detonating them? The statistics show that 48 people were killed last year by semi-automatic “assault” rifles (not actually assault rifles, but that is another issue). Thousands were killed by knives and hammers. Should we pass national laws against knives and hammers? Yet in response to Newtown, some people, along with the media with an agenda, screamed for new laws which will do nothing to make people safer or more secure.  At best, it may catch one or two crazed individuals if the background check is passed, but the guy in Colorado had no history, neither did the Newtown mother. They would have passed the check. So would the parents of the Columbine killers. Banning semi-automatic weapons will only remove them from the hands of law-abiding people. It will not remove them from the hands of the criminals who invade your home.

If you want security, the average response time for the police to arrive at your home during a robbery or assault is 10-20 minutes. The best defense against lawlessness and terror is an armed citizenry. The citizen soldier who defends his home is the first line of defense, not the last.

My point is that the government,  while doing its job, can stop many acts of terror, it cannot make us safe, and it is foolish to think it can. Police respond after the crime has been committed, not before. The government, local, state or federal, for the most part, cannot prevent crime or stop it from taking place. They can only respond to crime once it has happened.

I am glad the intelligence agencies are monitoring foreign phone calls and internet traffic, looking for clues to terrorist methods, plans, and propaganda, but I don’t hold an illusion that with all their best efforts, it makes us safe. It makes us safer, but not safe.

The only person to trust with your life and the lives of your family and friends is God. If you hear and obey, you can be protected if He so wills. But to trust God also means he may ask you to give your life away for His Name’s sake.

Beware Intuit QuickBooks tech “support” SCAM!

It seems Intuit Quickbooks has hidden or closed access to their customer to customer forums.  I encountered this Intuit tech “support” scam when trying to get help for a crashing Quickbooks 2012 on the Mac:

Aw, snap!

QB 2012 crash on Startup HELP!

I just upgraded to Mountain Lion on 2 computers. On my laptop, my QB 2012 works fine using the Same QB file on the Cloud. But on my desktop I get the splash screen and an immediate crash every time. The My Time (time tracking app) is also crashing.
I called tech support, but all these guys from India want to do is sell me an upgrade to 2013 “guaranteed” to work with Mt. Lion. Which is a total scam because I downloaded a trial of 2013 and it crashes just like 2012. I called tech back and they want to sell me 2013 and upgrade my files or charge me $400 to fix my customer file… which obviously is not the problem if it is working on my other computer!!! That is pure a baloney  bait and switch scam.  It has nothing to do with tech support. It has everything to do with selling you something you don’t need.

So, what should I do. Completely uninstall QB from my computer and reinstall? I tried a reinstall with a drag and drop of 2012 but something is badly porked deeper than the application.

**UPDATE: **   Apparently, I am not quite sure…,  the problem was a corrupt MyTime file.  I did several things, like reset permissions and attempt a safe reboot (which did not quite work!), and restarted again, and QB 2012  returned to normal.   All of that convinces me that the whole “help” line for Intuit is not really there to help you at all, but to scam you into an upgrade.  The fact that 2 different tech support people only offered the same options means that their only protocol is to abuse the user with false information and false guarantees of fixing the problem.

A Fan or A Follower?

The Wave at a Sporting Event Are you a fan of Jesus, or a follower? A fan can sit in the stands and do the wave. A follower gets out on the field, gets dirty and bruised. No place to play it safe when you are called to serve Jesus:

“If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you… Remember the word that I said to you, ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will persecute you…” John 15:18-20
